Lower-Crossed Syndrome (LCS) is also referred to as distal or pelvic crossed syndrome. In LCS, tightness of the thoracolumbar extensors on the dorsal side crosses with tightness of the iliopsoas and rectus femoris. Weakness of the deep abdominal muscles ventrally crosses with weakness of the gluteus maximus and medius. This pattern of imbalance creates joint dysfunction, particularly at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 segments, SI joint, and hip joint.

Upper- Crossed Syndrome (USC) is a muscle imbalance pattern located at the head and shoulder regions. It is most often found in individuals who work at a desk or who sit for a majority of the day and continuously exhibit poor posture. It is also referred to as proximal or shoulder girdle crossed syndrome. In UCS, tightness of the upper trapezius and levator scapula on the dorsal side crosses with tightness of the pectoralis major and minor. Weakness of the deep cervical flexors ventrally crosses with weakness of the middle and lower trapezius.

So which one are you? Your posture will determine the effectiveness of what ever you do, be it physical or mental. At some stage in most peoples lives, their posture will change. Many factors can attribute to this, from birth, being right or left handed, stuck in one postion all day, RSI or an injury, etc. A change in posture will have a knock on effect and the body will respondĀ  by compensating for it. Physically leading to pain, mostly muscular and possibly neural. Mentally, the emotional state will become negative, in both cases not good for your health or your life. What can be done?

Physical level Massage helps to relax the nervous system and decrease stress levels, tension and muscle spasms release, allowing for deeper breathing. Massage helps to reduce blood pressure and increase circulation. When muscles are too tense, circulation slows, reducing the absorption of nutrients and slows the removal of waste and toxins. This weakened circulation causes illness, slows healing and leads to problems involving the structure and function of the body. The lymphatic system is aided by massage to excrete wastes produced by the body's metabolism.
